The Epsilon Theta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity (Fall, 2022)

OUR HISTORY

On November 16, 1968, sixteen ladies received the charter to the Epsilon Theta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota, the first member of the Tau B Province. This was the third Greek organization on the campus of Appalachian State University, preceded by Alpha Psi Omega and the Rho Tau Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Since then, this chapter has completed many service projects, including the Appalachian Young Musicians Workshop for local children, and the Jessica Ruth Earley Scholarship Fund.

As of 2022, Epsilon Theta has joined Psi A Province, along with fellow undergraduate chapters Eta Theta (Western Carolina University), Gamma Rho (University of Tennessee-Knoxville), Lamda Beta (Mars Hill University) and the Asheville, NC alumnae chapter.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M ELIGIBLE FOR MEMBERSHIP?

ALL OF THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET FOR ELIGIBILITY

  • must have completed at least one semester at Appalachian State University.
  • must hold one of the following gender identities: transgender woman, cisgender woman, non-binary or gender non-conforming.
  • must have an established GPA at Appalachian State University of at least 2.5.
  • must have completed or be enrolled in at least one music course.
  • have a sincere interest in music.

What if I'm Not Eligible?

Even if you don't meet one or more of our requirements, we'd still love to see you at Recruitment Week! We initiate new members every semester.

I Don't Think I Have Time.

Sometimes potential members can feel like they don't have time for a fraternity or that their schoolwork, social life, or work will be affected. While it's true that there are time commitments for members, we understand that our members have other obligations and will try to work with you as best as we can. SAI holds scholarship as one of its biggest priorities and expects the same of its members. Several of our members have jobs, are involved in other campus organizations and activities, and have demanding majors. It can be done!

What Does the Member in Training Process Entail?

FIRST, you will come to recruitment week! Get to know the current members of Epsilon Theta. Remember, first impressions count! Show us your authentic self.

If invited to become a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, you will be assigned a BIG who, along with our Vice President, Membership (VPM) will guide you through your process into membership.

Your BIG and your VPM will help prepare you for the

National Exam that you'll take before the Initiation Ceremony!

In the meantime, you'll bond with current members of Epsilon Theta, and your fellow PMITs!

Following a passing score on the National Exam, and the completion of your MIT process, you will officially be initiated as a member of Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity! (YAY!)

Does SAI Haze?

ABSOLUTELY NOT! Sigma Alpha Iota maintains a very strict no hazing policy that each and every member must sign their name to.

Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity is committed to making sure our members and potential members feel comfortable, safe, and cared for.

Can I Still Be in Another Fraternity if I'm a Member?

Yes! While we do have exclusive membership with Mu Phi Epsilon, Delta Omicron, and Phi Beta, our members can also be members of other Greek organizations as long as they are still able to meet our requirements for members.
